Description
In L’ange du jugement, created in 1974, Marc Chagall returns to one of his most profound spiritual themes — the divine balance between mercy and judgment. The composition is dominated by a radiant angel, rendered in Chagall’s signature palette of deep blues, crimson reds, and glowing yellows, descending over an abstracted, dreamlike landscape. The figure embodies both celestial grace and solemn power, evoking the biblical imagery of the Last Judgment while maintaining Chagall’s poetic, deeply human touch. As in much of Chagall’s later work, this lithograph merges biblical narrative and personal symbolism. The angel becomes not a figure of fear but a messenger of renewal — a bridge between earthly life and the divine. Through soft lines and luminous color, Chagall transforms a traditional religious subject into a universal meditation on compassion, forgiveness, and the transcendence of the soul. Printed in Paris in collaboration with his master lithographers, L’ange du jugement stands among the final decades of Chagall’s graphic oeuvre, reflecting both his enduring faith and his lifelong vision of art as an instrument of spiritual harmony.
