Description
Marc Chagall’s lithographs in color involved a multi-step process. He would begin by drawing his desired image on a stone or metal plate. Next, he used chemicals to fix the image onto the surface. Chagall applied oil-based ink to the stone, using multiple colors as needed. A sheet of paper was then pressed onto the inked stone to transfer the image. Finally, he created a limited set of prints, signing and numbering each one. This meticulous process allowed Chagall to reproduce his colorful and imaginative artworks for a wider audience while maintaining their artistic integrity. The stones or metal plates were effaced after the editions were printed to prevent further printings.
